St Ignatius College priest Father Stanislaus John Hogan jailed over ‘graphic and repugnant’ child pornography

March 20, 2015
A SENIOR priest at a prestigious Adelaide private school who downloaded more than 1500
depraved images of child pornography will serve at least 10 months behind bars.
Father Stanislaus John Hogan, 69, had pleaded guilty to one count of using a carriage service
to access child pornography and one aggravated count of possessing child pornography.
The District Court has previously heard police had seized 1555 images and videos as part
of an illicit children pornography collection, which also included magazines
and books of children aged between three and 16 years.
The collection was found during a police raid of Hogan’s Saint Ignatius College residence at Athelstone in 2012.
In sentencing today, Judge Peter Brebner detailed some of the horrific child exploitation
material police found during a police raid of Hogan’s Saint Ignatius College residence at Athelstone in 2012.
He said Hogan’s offending had came about as he struggled to understand his sexuality.
“You struggled for years to reconcile your ethical, religious, spiritual and philosophical beliefs
with your sexuality and your prurient interests in child pornography,” he said.
Judge Brebner also said Hogan was found with three books — one of which
described the “graphic and repugnant” rape of an underage boy.
He said Hogan had applied to leave the Jesuit priesthood but wanted to remain
working at the church’s Sevenhill centre as a volunteer.
“You have impressive tertiary qualifications — you have had a long
and distinguished career teaching at Jesuit schools.
“You have lost your reputation and your vocation as a consequence of these crimes.
“However, these are often ordinary consequences of crimes such as yours and you are
intelligent enough to have known these things would happen.”
Hogan had been the school’s rector at the time of the raid and he had held prominent
teaching positions throughout Australia, including at St Aloysius’ in Sydney and
Xavier College in Melbourne, during the past three decades.
Australian Jesuits Provincial Superior Brian McCoy released a statement today apologising
for the behaviour of the once “well-respected priest and teacher.”
“We have in place across all our schools and other ministries firm policies and practices
for safeguarding children, at the heart of which is our fundamental commitment to respect,
nurture and protect children from harm,” she said.
Judge Brebner sentenced Hogan to two years and six months’ jail with a non-parole period of ten months.
He said Hogan’s crimes were simply “too serious” for him to consider suspending that sentence.

Church to provide financial support for priest caught with child pornography
July 5, 2014
A CATHOLIC school priest caught with more than 1500 child pornography images will receive financial support so he is not made homeless,
despite quitting the ministry.
Father Stanislaus John Hogan will be paid accommodation and cost-of-living expenses regardless of whether
he is jailed, the Jesuit Provincial Society has confirmed.
Hogan, 69, has pleaded guilty to one count of using a carriage service to access child pornography and one aggravated count of possessing child pornography.
The District Court has heardpolice seized 1555 images and videos of children and teenagers aged between
three and 16 years old in his bedroom at Saint Ignatius College in 2012.
In a letter to parents and guardians of students at the Athelstone college,
Father Stephen Curtin of the Jesuit Provincial Society said Hogan had asked to be released from his priestly ministry.
Father Curtin said the society would “continue to provide support for (Hogan’s) welfare into the future”.
“Stan Hogan sees that life for him as a cleric and as a member of the Jesuits is no longer tenable,” Father Curtin said.
“As an act of penitence, he will petition the Holy See for loss of his clerical status and dispensation from his religious vows.
“He will cease to Jesuit and he will not work as a priest again.”
When contacted by The Advertiser about the level of support Hogan would receive,
Father Curtin said Hogan would, following a possible custodial sentence,
“live in retirement as a layman with no priestly faculties in a Jesuit community in Australia”.
“Having been in the society all his adult life, Father Hogan has no assets, no income, no superannuation,” he said.
“The society believes it is only right and proper that Mr Hogan be so accommodated — board and lodging plus reasonable cost-of-living expenses.
“It would be unfair and unjust for Mr Hogan to be released on to the streets.”
Saint Ignatius College Rector Father Rob Davoren SJ said it was deeply saddened by events involving Hogan.
“While his admitted charges are not connected with anyone within the college,
including students past or present, we are mindful of the dreadful nature of pornographic images involving children,” he said.
“Many in our college community remain disappointed and angered by revelations about Father Hogan.
“We will continue to communicate openly with our community and offer our care and support to anyone at any time.”
Hogan will be sentenced later.

Father Stanislaus John Hogan was a former member of the Society of Jesus, better known as the Jesuits.
He was born in 1945 and was ordained as a priest in 1976.
Throughout his religious/teaching career, Father Hogan taught/served at the following schools:
Xavier College - Kew, Victoria;
St Aloysius College - Milsons Point, NSW; and
St Ignatius College - Athelstone, South Australia.
In 2013, Father Hogan was arrested by South Australia Police after finding in his private quarters at St Ignatius College
pornographic material which included over 1500 images, videos and books of children and teenagers aged between three and 16 years old.
One book in particular described in graphic detail the rape of an underage boy.
In 2015, Father Hogan pleaded guilty in the District Court to one count of using a carriage service to
access child pornography and one aggravated count of possessing child pornography.
He was originally sentenced to two-and-half years' jail with a non-parole period of 10 months.
However, the South Australian Court of Criminal Appeal that same year overturned the sentencing
and re-sentenced him to an 18-month good behaviour bond after suspending a jail term of one year, three months and three weeks.
This also included a six month non-parole period, but it was suspended.
The Court of Criminal Appeal found that while the original sentence was not excessive, the District Court judge should have applied a full 30 per cent guilty plea discount and should have suspended the sentence.
