Fr. Theo Overberg SJ, Secretary for the Jesuit Conference of Asia-Pacific of the Society of Jesus at the Jesuit Curia in Rome, charged with Indecent Assault by NSW police.


January 9, 2024
Theo Overberg is sentenced to 2 years jail with 5 months non-probationary period.
The Society of Jesus immediately appealed. He is out on bail waiting for the appeal.


July 15, 2023
Today he was found guilty of indecent assault (the more serious charge the cops were going for) of 3 students at Riverview.
Sentencing is scheduled for 19th September. The maximum is 5 years if convicted in the local court.
There is a directions hearing in the Supreme Court next Friday 21st.

Update Feb. 8, 2021 - it is believed that THEO OVERBERG has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
An associated civil suit, "Victim X" v. The Society of Jesus in Australia Ltd. is listed for first hearing in the NSW Supreme Court on this Thursday 11 Feb. 2021.
Update Jan. 29, 2021 - THEO OVERBERG's case set for hearing (trial) at Paramatta court on the 28 June 2021.
Update Jan. 20, 2021 - THEO OVERBERG's case adjourned to Paramatta court on the 29th January 2021.
Update Jan. 15, 2021 - THEO OVERBERG has returned to Australia from the Jesuit Curia, Rome to face the charges.
He could be staying at Canisisus House, Pymble or perhaps the Lavender Bay parish.

Theo Overberg s.j. was the Boarders' Master at St. Ignatius College, Riverview, Sydney in the 1970's.
He entered the Society of Jesus in 1965, and was ordained in 1978.
1986 - 1997 Rector of Aquinas College (University), Adelaide.
1997 - 1999 St Thomas More College, University of Western Australia, Perth.


A former students reports:
"One night after lights out a group of kids including myself were talking and goofing about.
Fr Overberg suddenly appeared with a torch and called out a group of kids including
myself [about 5 or 6] who he accused of engaging in this unruly behaviour.
He told us to wait outside his bedroom door which was close to the dormitory to await some form of punishment.
He then came back to his room and called us in individually, each kid was made to strip off naked
and lie on his bed face down, he then strapped us all on the bum a number of times [4 if I had to guess].
We were then sent back to our back to our beds.
This incident has always bothered me and as time goes by I realise how perverted and violent is was."

"in one of the online articles that I read about Higgs (Victor Higgs convicted paedophile) ,
one of his victims mentioned that he went to his Form Master to report the abuse from Higgs
and ended up being abused by this guy also, who would take him to his bedroom,
make him strip off and touch his genitals with a strap.
This sounds like Overberg to me."

Born in the Netherlands, Fr. Overberg's family emigrated to Australia while he was still a child,
and he was brought up just outside Ballarat, where he was educated by the Christian Brothers.
He entered the Society of Jesus in 1965, and was ordained in 1978.
He spent some of his Scholastic years at St. Ignatius, Riverview, Sydney. in the 1970's.

He served first as Vice Rector of Aquinas College at the University of Adelaide,
then as Rector there, before transferring to St Thomas More College in 1997 - 1999.
He served as Rector here (St. Thomas More College) for two years,
then took up the post of Master of Novices for the Australian Jesuit province.

Fr. Overburg returned to Perth in 2009, where he continued to serve as the parish priest of Holy Rosary Church in Nedlands.
Then in mid-March 2010 was given his exalted position in Rome.


In 2013 Michael Bertie walked the Ignatian Camino with Michael Smith s.j. and a group of 20 pilgrims
including Theo Overberg s.j.
Michael Smith s.j. is currently the International Education Coordinator for Jesuit Refugee Service and is based in Rome.

There are currently at least FOUR Child Sex Abusers who were Jesuit priests at Xavier College walking around free and untroubled because the Jesuits won't do anything about them. Some may be under police investigation.
Why?
How many sex abuse reports to the Police have not been investigated?
The Society of Jesus is legally able to keep details of sex abuse information secret. The Jesuits will not investigate their own priests.
And influential Catholics will not demand the release of sex abuse files.
And influential Catholics will not demand the cover-ups be investigated (Higgs is the only exception).
